Durham region
Durham Region, population 531,000, lies immediately to the east of the City of Toronto along a continuous urbanized lakeshore. Characterized by a variety of landscapes and communities, eight municipalities make up the Region: the Townships of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock, the Towns of Ajax, Whitby and Pickering, the City of Oshawa, and the Municipality of Clarington.
The relatively flat lakeshore area marked by the bluffs, wooded creeks and ancient shoreline, features contrasts with the Oak Ridges Moraine running parallel to the shoreline only 15 miles to the north. This diverse landscape of woods, headwaters, ridges and hollows gives way to rolling farmlands and lakes to the north. Here the Municipality spreads into the prime recreational lakelands of Simcoe, Scugog and the Kawarthas.
Durham is a thriving region, known for the strength of its manufacturing sector and its valuable mineral and gravel deposits. The presence of General Motors, aerospace, defense, pharmaceutical, plastics and packaging industries has added to its healthy growing economic base.
Water sports and boating are favourite activities in Durham, which offers more than ten km of beaches and plenty of boating docks. Lake Scugog Reserve, Kendal Park Reserve, Greenwood Conservation Area and Darlington Provincial Park are also superb sites for outdoor recreation.
