Formerly Scarborough, East Toronto is Woburn, Agincourt, West Hill, L’Amoreaux, Highland Creek, Guildwood and Port Union/Rouge. These communities stretch east from Victoria Park to the Rouge River, north from Lake Ontario to Steeles Avenue.
The district’s multicultural base provides unique texture and vitality. It’s estimated that 25 per cent of East Toronto’s population is Chinese, making it the largest Chinese Cultural Centre in Canada. There are 12,000+ businesses here in several established and developing industrial districts, zoned for industrial and commercial use. Companies in the Scarborough area include Honda Canada Inc., Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd., Maksteel Service Centre, Proving Graphics/Laird Printing, Viva Magnetics Ltd. and Metco Fashions. The area is flourishing with recently completed and on-going projects: a $22 million, 850-seat visual and performing arts centre; an 80,000 square foot expansion to Scarborough Town Centre; a 12-screen theatre complex accommodating 3,500 moviegoers; and an all-stadium seating movie theatre accommodating 2,500 in 11 auditoriums.
Agincourt, in the northwest, is a popular residential community combining old and new housing units. Guildwood, in the southeast, on Lake Ontario, is another popular neighbourhood. The southwestern edge of Scarborough includes an exclusive area offering executive housing close to the waterfront. The area around the Civic Centre offers upscale high-rise condominiums, and Port Union provides a wide variety of housing options.
Brimley Woods is noted for its abundant white trilliums, Ontario’s official flower. Thomson Memorial Park has picnic areas, shelters, fireplaces, a sports field and playground equipment. The Scarborough Memorial Museum and the McCowan Log Cabin are located in the park. Bluffers Park, at the bottom of Brimley Road, offers one of the most spectacular views of the Scarborough Bluffs (apartments for rent in this area can be tough to find but see links below), and is home to the Bluffers Park Boating Association. The park provides 400 acres of parkland offering public beaches, food services, recreation activities, sailing school, boat storage and more than 50 charter fishing vessels.
The Toronto Zoo - one of the best in the world - has more than 710 acres of parkland and and is home to at least 5,000 animals. The provincial government created the Rouge Park in the northeast corner of East Toronto covering some 5,000 acres. It’s the largest urban park in North America, providing recreational and educational activities without compromising the area’s environmental integrity. Area shopping centres include Scarborough Town Centre, Cedarbrae Mall, Agincourt Mall, Morningside, Warden Power Centre, Bridlewood Mall, Woodside Square and Eglinton Square. Kingston Road, Eglinton Avenue, Lawrence Avenue, Ellesmere Road, Sheppard Avenue, Finch Avenue, Steeles Avenue, and Hwy 401 are East Toronto’s major east-west arteries.
The TTC serves the area well, particularly with the Scarborough RT line from the Kennedy subway station to the centre of town. GO trains serve the southern parts of East Toronto, with stops at Midland, Eglinton, Guildwood and Rouge Hill.
