Formerly called Etobicoke, West Toronto is made up of Mimico, New Toronto, Long Branch, Alderwood, Kingsway, Islington, Markland Woods, Rexdale, Thistletown, and Humberwood as well as the new community of Humber Bay Shores.  Hwy 427 connects all of Toronto’s major arteries ‹ the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), Hwys 401, 409 and the 407. Bolstered by several subway and transit feeder systems, residents and businesses are attracted to this community with its combination of employment opportunities and accessibility to skilled labour.

West Toronto has highly respected schools, and a full cultural life as evidenced by Arts Etobicoke, an umbrella group that includes 60 local arts groups.

This area has a good mix of housing options. The well-established Lakeshore neighbourhoods of Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch that span the shores of Lake Ontario, offer some Toronto apartments for rent. Also in the moderate range is the area of Alderwood close to Sherway Gardens, a shopping centre with 265 stores. Queensway Hospital is a family-oriented health care facility. The south part of the area has an established industrial base with manufacturing facilities along the QEW. Alongside these buildings are large lakefront parks (including several yacht clubs) such as Humber, Sam Smith and Marie Curtis.

In a higher price range, Central West Toronto includes established executive neighbourhoods such as The Kingsway. Other upscale central West Toronto neighbourhoods are Islington and Markland Woods. Also in Central West Toronto is the Kipling/Islington business/residential area stretching along the main arteries of Bloor and Dundas Streets. Toronto’s subway serves this area directly and some businesses and condominiums have access right in their buildings or through connecting underground passages.

Central West Toronto is the home of many excellent parks, including the 500-acre Centennial Park, offering golf, skiing, baseball and swimming at the world-class Olympium. North West Toronto is notable for Woodbine Race Track, Humber College, the Woodbine Centre, two golf courses and Etobicoke General Hospital. The area has attracted industry in many sectors with respected names such as Litton and Allied Signal, Labatt Breweries, Molsons, General Mills, Monarch Foods, Sears, The Bay, Holt Renfrew, and The Brick. There is also a growing bio-medical sector here.
